The Meaning and Reality of Baptism

English

Many believers treat baptism as a formality or an outward ritual — something done once and then largely forgotten. This booklet opens three vivid Old Testament pictures that reveal the deep spiritual reality behind it: the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14), the crossing of the Jordan River (Joshua 3–4), and Noah's passing through the flood in the ark (Genesis 7). Together these pictures show that baptism is not a ceremony but an entry into union with Christ, the destruction of Satan's power, and a life-altering passage from the old creation into the new. The Red Sea passage, as Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 10, was a baptism "in the cloud and in the sea" — both with water and with the Holy Spirit. When Pharaoh and his armies drowned, Israel was definitively separated from Egypt. In the same way, baptism proclaims to Satan that he has been judged and destroyed by Christ's death on the cross, and that the believer is now joined to Christ and beyond his reach (Heb. 2:14; Col. 1:13). The Jordan River crossing adds a second dimension: the twelve stones buried in the Jordan represent the old man, the flesh, and the fallen natural self — crucified with Christ and buried in baptism (Rom. 6:6) — so that the believer can walk in newness of life as a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). The ark of Noah shows that just as only those in the ark were saved from the flood, so living in the reality of baptism — abiding in Christ — is the way of safety from the coming day of God's wrath. The booklet closes with a series of New Testament examples: Pentecost, the household of Cornelius, Paul's conversion in Damascus, the Philippian jailer, and the Ethiopian eunuch. Each shows that believing in Christ and being baptized into Christ belong together like a pair of shoes — upon believing, the disciples were baptized without delay. The final exhortation, drawn from Acts 2:38, is a personal invitation: repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
