Everyone will know me – from the youngest to the oldest
.webp)
And they will no longer teach one another, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord!’ For they will all know me, from the least to the greatest among them.
— Hebrews 8:11
What a wonderful promise of the New Covenant! We are all able to know the Lord personally and hear him speak. Not just a few particularly experienced or learned brothers and sisters, but every single one of us, including the youngest amongst us.
“And the anointing which you have received from him abides in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you; but just as his anointing teaches you about all things … so abide in him.” (1 John 2:27)
The anointing is already within us! We do not first have to receive it or do anything special to obtain it. The Holy Spirit has been given to us so that we may know what the Lord desires in every situation.
We may well have heard many sermons and attended many conferences. The Word is good, and the fellowship encourages us. But who teaches us, in our everyday lives on a Monday morning, how we should apply the Lord’s teachings? Who shows us how to respond in a difficult situation, how to deny ourselves, or how to win Christ as our Saviour? For this we need the anointing! It teaches us all things and leads us into the reality of the Word.
We often turn first to our own minds, then to other people. Yet the Lord says: ‘I have much more to tell you’ (John 16:12). Why do we not turn to him first? He has promised that we shall all come to know him!
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.” (Prov. 3:5–6)
To do this, we must learn to find peace, to humble ourselves, to set aside our own preconceptions and to listen to what He has to say. Let us ask ourselves every day: Did I hear the Lord’s voice today? Did I follow it?
All the members of the Body are directly connected to Christ, the Head. When we trust in his anointing and follow it, we gain Christ in our daily lives and can offer spiritual sacrifices to the Father.
Lord, bring us into the reality of the New Covenant! Teach us to trust in your anointing in every situation, to listen to your voice and to follow you!
