The Feast of Pentecost – The Holy Spirit Reminds Us and Makes God’s Word a Reality in Us

In the New Covenant, the Lord has poured out the Holy Spirit within us so that we may all come to know and experience Him personally. What was not possible under the Old Covenant has become a reality through Pentecost: Whilst the Lord wrote His Law on stone tablets at Sinai, today He wishes to write it on our hearts (Jer. 31:33). We must place our complete trust in the Holy Spirit to bring everything the Lord has said into reality within us.

“But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.” (John 14:26)

Many of the Holy Spirit’s functions remain untapped within us. We make too little use of it and ask the Lord too little about it. Yet the best Teacher dwells within us: the Lord Himself! If we do not understand the priestly ministry or the burnt offering, this is an opportunity to experience the inner Anointing, so that it may reveal spiritual reality to us (1 John 2:27). To whom do we turn to first? Do we even ask the Lord? Or do we look for answers in Bible commentaries or on the internet?

The Comforter is not merely a consolation for Jesus’ absence. Through Him, the Lord is just as real with us as if He were still on earth, for He remains with us forever and is within us (John 14:16–18). He accompanies and admonishes us throughout the day, so that we do not become lost in the world. Whenever we are tempted to stray to the right or to the left, we hear His word: ‘This is the way, walk in it!’ (Isaiah 30:21).

For the Spirit to be able to remind us, the Word of Christ must dwell within us in abundance (Col. 3:16). We must fill our minds with the Word so that the Spirit has something to remind us of. Otherwise, what the Spirit says often remains general, like the voice of conscience. But when the Word dwells within us, what the Spirit says becomes very specific: How should I react now? What should I say? How should I pray?

Let us often ask the Lord to help us remember his Word! He is faithful and will bring it back to our minds. This remembrance keeps us alert (2 Peter 1:13) and wants to bring something forth in us. His word shall not return void (Isaiah 55:11). When the Lord reminds us of his word, that is often precisely the opportunity to, to offer a sacrifice or to celebrate a feast of the Lord!
