The Lord Writes His Law in Our Minds and Hearts
-1.webp)
‘For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days,’ says the Lord, ‘I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.’
— Hebrews 8:10
In the New Covenant, the Law has not been abolished. The Lord no longer inscribes His laws externally on tablets of stone, but in our minds and on our hearts. The Law of the Aaronic priesthood was a ‘law of a fleshly commandment’; Christ, on the other hand, is a priest ‘according to the power of an indestructible life’ (Heb. 7:16). This is the way of the New Covenant: not an external requirement, but the working of his life through the Spirit within us.
What the Lord continually inscribes within us eventually becomes part of our lives. Just as many aspects of our daily work become second nature because we have learnt and practized them over the years, so too does the Lord wish to inscribe His priestly service within us.
The order in Hebrews 8 is important here: first, the Lord writes His laws in our minds and on our hearts (v. 10), and then it says: ‘They shall all know me’ (v. 11). When his Word dwells alive within us, we come to know the Lord himself.
To do this, we must learn to exercise control over our minds and fill them with the Word of the Lord. Our thoughts and hearts are quick to stray towards trivialities, impurity and the things of this world. The enemy, too, seeks to imprint his ways upon us permanently. Therefore, as soon as our minds wander, let us turn to the Lord and refocus them on His Word. It is a matter of life itself, but also our responsibility.
At the same time, we need a soft, compassionate heart. The world and sin can quickly harden our hearts. When we read the Word and find that it no longer speaks to us, we must repent and turn back to the Lord. Then our hearts will become soft again, and His Word can be written more deeply within us.
What the Lord has written in our hearts becomes our reality through faith. Then His commandments are no longer merely external requirements, but become our way of life and conduct. Whether we bear witness to the Gospel, serve our brothers and sisters, or take on very practical tasks in the house of God – we do not do so merely because we know we ought to, but because His law works in us. The Lord has written it in our hearts, and His anointing is at work within us.
The same word appears again in Hebrews 10:16 – specifically in the context of Christ as the reality of the sacrifices: ‘I will put my laws into their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.’ The laws concerning Christ as our sacrifice are also to be written upon our hearts. When God’s Word dwells richly within us, it also brings forth spiritual sacrifices and a living priestly ministry.
Lord, keep our minds on the right path, soften our hearts, and engrave your law ever more deeply within us.
